Movember 2026 (Novembre Bleu): why talk about men’s health?
Movember, known in France as Novembre Bleu, is November’s awareness month for men’s health: prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. Its message comes down to three actions: talk about it, see a doctor, check in on one another.
What is Movember (Novembre Bleu)?
It is a movement that started in Australia in 2003 and reached France in 2012, where it goes by the name Novembre Bleu. Every November, it invites people to talk about what we too often put off: men’s health.
Who is affected, and by what?
The figures below are for France, where Novembre Bleu is observed.
- Prostate cancer. No cancer is more common in men. It is rare before age 50 and has a good prognosis; it accounted for 59,885 new cases in 2018 in mainland France (French National Cancer Institute, INCa).
- Testicular cancer. It mostly affects young men (median age at diagnosis: 36), with a net five-year survival rate of 93% (Santé publique France).
- Mental health. Nearly three in four suicide deaths are men (2023 data).
What can I do during Movember?
- Talk about it, with someone close to you or a colleague.
- See a doctor without waiting for symptoms to “pass.” For prostate cancer, screening is not organized in France: it is discussed with a doctor, usually from age 50, or from 45 with risk factors. For testicular cancer, doctors advise young men to check themselves about once a month; any lump calls for prompt medical advice.
- Check in on others, and really listen to the answer.
Where can I find help when things feel heavy?
In France, 3114 is the national suicide prevention number: free, available 24/7, for the person in distress and for their loved ones. Elsewhere, reach out to your local mental health or emergency services. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
